August 2016--Timeline Year Thirty-Four
Announcing the establishment of the Spengler Institute, a partnership of GBI with some surprising collaborators. Plus a familiar face enters the 2017 New York Mayoral race.

Spoiler:

This is one half set-up for the status quo as seen in the Ghostbusters 2021 origin story Eye of Aretpo, and the other half a suggested use in the Ectozone/GBOT fanon of some characters that have appeared on the Ghostbusters scene recently. I don't know if it's a compromise that will satisfy anybody, but I had to try!

Nice. That reminds me of another thing from the 2020's team. When do they finally retire the Ecto-1 and replace it with a fuel-cell powered replivehicle? Do they give the old girl an honorable retirement?

It's honestly amazing they only went through two '59 Cadillac Miller-Meteors before the replivehicle was introduced...

I had a goofy grin while reading. Will there be a fic about how they were added in. And will there be a Patty origin fic that pretty much covers what she'd been up to, that we haven't seen in GBOT?

I haven't really nailed it down yet; it may have already happened. Off the top of my head, I'd probably say they parked the former 1A inside GBI HQ and it's more of a display now. Or heck, maybe they even donated it to the Smithsonian...yeah, I kinda like the thought of the ECTO-1 at the National Air and Space Museum next to Apollo 11's Command Module. Certainly a better fate that rusting in a Sony backlot.

I'm not working on it at the moment, though I may drop a mention or two into a story I'm currently working on, set in 1998. But here's some of the brainstorms I have in mind for backstory:

Evangelean Zeddemore is Winston's sister, mentioned in "Back In the Saddle" and GBLegion#1. She married Bill Tolan, one of Ed Zeddemore's construction crew, and at some point before 1992 they moved to Montana (per, again, "Back In the Saddle"). They're GBOT Patty's parents. GBOT Patty would have at least one brother, probably younger, born sometime before 1984 (Winston mentions a nephew in GBLegion#1).

I have yet to nail down all the GBOT birth dates of the GB2016 characters; I lean toward having Erin and Abby born about 1977 (in the book Ghosts From Our Past Erin is victimized by a ghost after Halloween 1985, when she was eight). Holtzmann, probably around 1984, same as her actress. For Patty, I admit, my first thought is to make her a bit younger than Leslie Jones--Jones was born in 1967; GBOT Winston would be about 15 at that time. Evangelean can always be an older sister, of course, though I'm also contemplating making Patty about eight years younger than Jones (the same amount Winston is younger than Ernie Hudson), which would have her born in 1975. (I admit, I was surprised to find out Leslie Jones was almost fifty--she doesn't look it to me)

One obvious change is that GBOT Patty probably hasn't lived her whole life in New York City. She could have moved there any time after she turned 18--her grandparents lived there all along, and Uncle Winston would be there after 1997. Once she gets there she's probably back to being closer to the movie character, having worked in the MTA for numerous years.

I'll second the thought, Fritz. It'd be a nice contrast, the technology of 1959 (the Cadillac-Miller Meteor) and the technology of 1969 (the Apollo XI. Command Module).

And who knows, Fritz... There might be a fan-fiction in what happens when GBI tries to donate Ecto to The Smithsonian Institution.

Ok, this came into my head as to how the tech will evolve.

Proton Pack: The Spengler Institute will create the Mark 5 model, still visually identical to the Mark 1 and the Mark 4 (because Dr. Stantz is being sentimental, but also because there's dozens of Ghostbusters around who've been using the Mark 4, and thus would reduce retraining requirements), but implements new advances in electronics to be even lighter than the Mark 4, which was already noticeably lighter than the Mark 1. In terms of weight, I'm thinking that the weight savings aren't nearly as drastic as the difference between the Mark 1 and the Mark 4, but it's still appreciated by Ghostbusters in the field.

Note: I consider the weight of the packs to go like this.

Mark 1 - 80-85lbs (I'm basing this on a comment from the 2009 video game, where a fully-tricked out pack, with all the extra experimental equipment added on, was described as "100 pounds of proton accelerator", so this would be the weight without all those extra features. It's still heavy enough to get Dr. Venkman bitching about it  )
Mark 4 - 60lbs (The mentioned weight of the Mark 4 system, as noted in the story "Word to Your Mummy")
Mark 5 - 50lbs (This would be what the 2021 team would be lugging around)

Ghost Trap: A Mark 3 trap would be in development, and then be quietly shelved when John and Eden create the GBX.

PKE Meter: A Model 4.0, the most powerful hand-held PKE meter ever created, enters service for a few years before the introduction of the GBX causes it to be mostly retired. Notably, it does it's job even better than the GBX's PKE module, as the Spengler twins had to sacrifice some capability to integrate it with all the other stuff the GBX can do (PKE Meter, Ghost Trap, and communications? Something had to give). As a result of this, some franchises continue to use this model even after acquiring their own GBX's.

Ecto-Goggles: Mark 2 design, much more compact than the old version, with an updated interface. Useful enough that it continues to be in service even after the introduction of the GBX.
