This one is a sentimental favorite of mine--it was the first one I'd ever seen. Going into it almost completely cold (all I knew was "new Ghostbusters cartoon") I saw new characters in the intro and the first few minutes. But when Maurice LaMarche's Egon Spengler voice came in over Kylie's walkie-talkie, I nerdgasmed hard. It was a Friday, so I spent the whole weekend trying to guess what was going on ("Where are the other Ghostbusters? Where's JANINE?!" She wasn't in this one). Monday was a rerun of "Darkness At Noon, Part One" so I found out about that last one pretty quick. Ray, Venkman, and Winston took a couple months longer.

Anyway...

There was a story in the Now Comics series where Egon used a proton gun to pop popcorn. Interesting that there didn't seem to be the same kind of problem there that there is with the sausages here. It's almost like they were made almost a decade apart by different writing and editorial teams or something. (There was also a deleted scene for Ghostbusters Afterlife where Phoebe also pops popcorn with a proton gun)

Well, this was the Nineties, and the real world New York Mayor, Rudy Giulliani, was trying to crack down on crime, so having Egon, Roland, and Garrett arrested and throw into a precinct jail cell is pretty plausible. They were probably waiting arraignment before a judge. If they were lucky, they would get Judge Harry Stone. If they were REALLY lucky, they wouldn't get Louis Tully to represent them.

Being a little older when I saw this for the first time (26) I pretty much went "Oh, yeah, they're totally setting up all the comedy will-they-won't-they tropes with Eduardo and Kylie." As I've said before, at the time they reminded me a little bit of Venkman and Dana in the first movie, though Eduardo wasn't nearly as pushy as Venkman was. It brought something new to the table in that area, since Egon and Janine were still sadly stuck in the same status quo that they never (in official material) really got out of.

Maybe I've been prejudiced by this episode, but I think that sounds incredibly dangerous!
Well, I wouldn't know that because I'm British. Thank you for answering my question - I really do like that. Where I come from, the police can hold suspects for 24 hours if they have sufficient grounds, which I guess the use of proton guns would be (hard to know, really!). But after that time, no way would they have enough evidence to charge them - the truth of what happened is perfectly plausible - so they'd have to be released.
That love/hate trope can badly misfire. I suppose it was meant to be comedic on paper, but I never found it so - just extraordinarily well done (though I wasn't thinking in such details at age 12).

Another good one. A spotlight on Garrett, who often seems to be completely played as "sarcastic adrenaline junkie who just happens to be in a wheelchair" he gets some good character development here, as he finds out his old friend has become a raging bigot. He's in denial at first--a very human reaction--but once he figures it out there's no question in his mind who his real friends are.

I wish I could say that such toxic mixes of antisemitism, racism, sexism, and ableism were a thing of the past, but the last decade in America has made it clear that nope, still around.

If you do more, I'll definitely be there for it!
